Lab Test of Corexit and Crude on Seawater

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Looks like BP’s use of Corexit added greatly to the environmental disaster.

Kenny Scharf Mural Continues

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Look closely at the lines of the spray strokes, they create a lovely filigree, making the forms light, airy and boldly three dimensional. On Saturday night Scharf had several people helping him, but he is still operating the lift and spraying every ounce of paint himself.

Kenny Scharf Friday Night

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Update – Saturday: I’m editing video and composing music to replace the deafening roar of the lift engine. I should have something up by tomorrow.
Kenny Scharf Friday Night
Os Gemeos had a large crew of helpers, but Kenny Scharf seems to be doing it all himself. He said he had someone keeping him company, but driving the lift and the painting is all up to him. I’m loving the spray strokes, delicately delineating the shapes and shades. You need to see the mural in person, it is luminous. I asked him how long it took him to get up on that same wall in 1985. But I couldn’t get an answer.

Kenny Scharf - Dec 1984
I think this Scharf mural from December 1984 was done on this same wall. They were colorful quick, dirty and illegal.

The space filling reminds me of Escher, but I suspect this is all improvised.

Pasted Paper – NYC 2010

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Since 11 Spring was buffed, and the Meat Packing district bleached of its stench, there are only a few spots left in Manhattan where you can find wheat pastings. The Candy Factory in Soho, and the former Swoon mural wall on the Lower East Side are mostly what’s left. The Deitch wall featured veteran wheat paster Shepard Fairey this summer, and the piece took a lot of abuse. It looked too much like a tee-shirt ad. In general painters are given more respect than pasters on the street.

Kenny Scharf makes a surprise appearance at the end. I think he last painted this wall in the Eighties.

And yes that is me ranting with myself in the soundtrack. Use the mute if needed.

R Crumb – Stikman Mashup

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

R Crumb - Stikman Mashup
Two of my favorite artists, R. Crumb and Stikman together at last. At first I was thinking that it was someone else appropriating the work of both artists, but Stikman is known to use R. Crumb images, so my guess is that it is a genuine Stikman sticker. It is possibly rererencing people collecting street art. Notice that someone has tried to peel this sticker.

New Water Main Continues

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Sparks
Although they unnecessarily, I think, blocked off lanes on East Houston Street for a week while nothing was being done, once they got going this crew is very efficient, and not overly noisy.
Water Main Replacement
My guess is that they are laying the pipe parallel to the old one, and won’t be running water through this one until the job is complete.

Downtown Skyline Jan 2003

Monday, November 15th, 2010

When I moved to my new server several months ago, I didn’t feel like going through the trouble of updating all the old image links. I’m slowly uploading my blog photos from before I got a Flickr account. These early photos were taken with my first mega-cheap, mega-crappy digital camera.
