Andre the Giant

Andre the Giant. I had no idea why this image kept getting recycled over and over again. I’ve seen this stylized face plastered on walls and lampposts around here and elsewhere (Philly for example) for more than a decade. But I only found out who it was supposed to be a few years ago. I mean it is funny, but it seemed to be someone’s repetitious artistic life’s work, or just a fan obsession with the 7’4″ and 500 pound wrestler who suffered from acromegaly (the overabundant growth hormone disease). But Googling for Andre brought me to this website that explains its underlying subversive intent. This pasted paper piece is larger than it looks in the photo. Approx. 6′ by 8′. It’s in the vacant lot between 2nd Avenue and Bowery on First Street.
“Blind Acceptance Can Be Hazardous.” Pasted paper in the same vacant lot apparently posted by the “Andre the Giant Posse.”
