East River Park Construction
I stuck my camera through the fence to get this panorama, composed of five separate awkwardly held photos. View Large

East River Park Pilings
Shot from the Williamsburg Bridge. It looks like there is definite progress being made where the crane barge is docked. At least material is being delivered to the site. But the promenade is still closed to the public below Houston Street.

Crane Barge Again

Crane Barge Again
I had high hope for progress on the East River Promenade when this crane barge showed up a couple of weeks ago, but I can’t see any major change between May 9th and the 19th. I’ll try to get closer to the same perspective the next time I get a shot from the bridge.

East River Park Construction
There was work being done further south of the barge.

Graceland Gone

Graceland
Graceland was the first Korean deli in the neighborhood, right? Gracefully remains. It’s been a long time since I shopped at either store, the prices are so high.

AB-Upolstering
A B Upholstering Co. Interior Decorators. My memories are dim on this. I’m sure I never bought anything there. I do remember dark dusty bolts of cloth in the windows, but that could just be the dimming of memory.

What’s your estimate on when this construction will come to some conclusion?

Serious Progress on the Promenade

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Crane Barge
This is a good sign, a crane barge works on the segment of the East River Promenade that needs the most work.
View Large – Please be aware: getting a seamless panorama hand-held through a chain link fence is unlikely.
East River Park Progress
The Lower East Side Ecology Center, still being used as the construction office.
Hexagonal Paving
Access to the Promenade is still only between 14th and Houston Streets, but I hope it won’t be long before they let us on the next segment, south and under the bridge to Grand Street. (pictured). The easiest way to bike to the public segment of the promenade from downtown is to cross the FDR at Houston Street and go north a few blocks to the entrance.

Promenade Construction

Promenade Construction
Looking south from the Williamsburg Bridge. The segment of the East River Promenade between Houston and Grand Streets looks close to completion. The section south of that still has much work to be done.
Promenade Construction
Looking north from the bridge. The promenade is open between Houston and 14th Streets. The southern entrance is at 4th Street.

Fishing the East River
Early Sunday morning, fishing behind the gate, paving stones are stacked behind him.

Fresh Asphalt

Fresh Asphalt
On this first hot day of Spring 2010, the cool breeze off the East River was refreshing. Here, south of the Williamsburg Bridge the breeze smelt of fresh asphalt, but that was good, as it signals progress on the Promenade.

East River Promenade

East River Promenade
The northern segment of the John V. Lindsay East River Park Promenade is open between 14th and Houston Streets. Entrances are between 4th and 14th Streets.

Saved From the Atlantic Gyre
Count the bottles in the full size version This accumulation of garbage is probably left over from the heavy rains a couple weeks back, but I suspect that the wakes from the sightseeing boats could deposit it there as well. At least this plastic was held back from the Atlantic Gyre.

East River Pilings
Low tide reveals the remains of the pilings that held up the old promenade.

Williamsburg Bridge - East River Park
The southern portion of the promenade is still under construction and fenced off from the public. The Parks Department says it will be completed this spring. But to me it looks like much work is still to be done.

Has anyone seen anything being constructed here lately?
