Chico’s Obama and McCain Mural

Obama by Chico
Chico is the default muralist in the East Village, he seems to have the store-burglar-gate franchise, just about all of them are painted by him and his crew. Here’s his Obama and McCain mural on Avenue C.

Pope Mural Splattered Again

Pope Mural Splattered
Chico’s Pope John Paul memorial mural has been splattered again. The first time was in June, and Chico flawlessly repaired it. This latest splatter with what looks like the same color paint happened a few days ago. Houston and Avenue B.

Pope Memorial Splattered

Chico’s memorial to the late Pope has been splattered with some brown paint. Earlier in the GammaBlaBlog.

Celia Cruz Mural

Celia Cruz memorial replaces the Pope and "Peace Not Memorials" mural (see below) on Houston Street near Avenue B. This is a new mural by "Chico and Pete." The line is a lot livelier than Chico usually gets, I’d have to credit "Pete."

Chico

Probably 80% of the murals in this area are done by one artist, Chico. It is very rare to see anyone write over his work. This political one was an exception, it gathered some magic marker comments. Also it was promptly modified to tone-down it’s political content. Houston Street and Avenue B.

Many of Chico’s memorial pieces for dead kids can’t help but touch your heart. But I’m not much of a fan of his ubiquitous commercial murals, his rendering is fairly crude and the subject matter dull. I have to look at insipid smiley faces on a yellow background for the dental clinic on Avenue A, and a crude rendering of the Band Kiss, (plus more smiley faces), on a bar on First Street. Chico often incorporates corporate logos into his murals, but I’m fairly sure that it is at the store owner’s prompting, not Coke or Pepsi. But who knows.
