* To the Rally * Saturday - 3/20/04

I went to Union Square Park to join the Lower East Side feeder march to the The World Still Says No To War rally.

I was expecting for us to have to march up to 42nd Street in order to approach the 23rd and Madison rallying point.
This lineup of horse-cops looked ominous. They were used to intimidate and herd the protesters in the Feb. 2003 rally.
Even though I kept looking for the sucker-punch the cops were apparently instructed to be nice and not to herd us into the obnoxious block-long pens they used last year. We entered Madison Avenue at 27th Street and were free to mingle up and down the route. Here’s the best photo I was able to get showing the size of the crowd. It’s looking down Madison Avenue to 23rd Street from about 40th Street.

Maybe some press photographer on a roof or in a helicopter has a shot that can show the size of the crowd. From ground-level it’s just about impossible. Madison and 23rd.

      * Signs *
This made me laugh. After Cheney, is Satan is an appropriate running mate for W in ‘04?
One Nation under Godzilla.

WXRK's DJ Julie Slater's sign - "Save Howard Stern - Save Free Speech - Save US! - Vote Bush Out"

"Bush to Mars." - "US out of Haiti."
"Want to end terrorism? Stop being terrorists!!"

Skull and Bones VsSkull and Bones. Referring to the fact that both Bush and Kerry were members of this secretive Yale organization.

Empty Warhead Found in Whitehouse.
This guy, I'm assuming it's the same guy, is at all the demonstrations simpering around, with his bloody hands molesting the globe.
I didn't see it go, but this "US Empire" statue got toppled later on. It was gone when I passed by later. Toppling photo from Diane Lent Via notobush.com

      * Drummers and Dancers *
I brought one of my homemade percussion instruments to the rally and joined-up with a couple of good djembe drummers. We were then joined by three indefatigable high-school girls who danced for a solid four hours. My instrument ( a hollow wooden block with attached cymbal made from a can lid) was cracked , splintered and destroyed by five o’clock when I left the rally.
Dancers
Drummers
Dancer.
More Dancers. This is at the end of the rally where many drummers and dancers gathered at 25th and Madison. According to Indymedia NYC “a group of 100 or so drummers marching downtown at 6pm innitially caused a tense standoff with police.

      * Yoko Ono *
Someone pointed out Yoko Ono to me. Otherwise I would never have noticed her behind her blue peace-balloon, though she was almost in the front of this group marching behind behind a white peace banner. I later saw some blue balloons with a sign attached floating down the street.

      * Organizations *
"Speak Truth to Power." The Quakers had a large contingent.
Code Pink was there.
Rockland NY Peace Coalition.

      * Counter Demonstrators *

This small group of "Protest Warriors" behind a phalanx of cops shouted "USA! USA!!" at us. Yes this country is founded upon some fine principals. I started shouting "USA! USA!!" back at them, and was soon joined by the rest of the crowd. They were dumbfounded. It shut them up completely. The Buddhists drummers ahead of us were highly amused.

Mixed in with them was one guy who was a Jack Kevorkian supporter in opposition to circumcising infants.
Another Bush supporter.
