Halloween in the Dark

Halloween ghost. I took my camera and tripod out once again on Halloween night. I was hoping to find some people out partying in costumes. I thought I could get cool portraits, if I could get them to stay still for a time exposure. I saw maybe three people in costume during the entire walk through the East Village. And for most of that time the streets were eerily empty. I didn’t feel threatened, but I was a bit spooked.
Halloween moon on Houston Street. The moon provided some lighting but most of the highlights came from car headlights. I was doing exposures ranging from 1 to 10 seconds. The tripod I took was lightweight, which was the only feasible choice for trekking around in the dark. It was fine for the most part but any minor jarring would ruing the crispness of the image.
Bowery, Houston graffiti mural.
The Con Ed building was lit up by a giant generator parked on 14th Street.
Food and light for Astor Place.
Astor Place.
NYU all lit up.
Cop-lit cobblestones.
Broadway eats.
Sixth Avenue and the Jefferson Market Library.
Nice!
Halloween this year = spooky without all the fun.
If the sky hadn’t been illuminated by midtown, I wonder if we’d been able to see the milky way. Maybe not, as it was still pretty cloudy.
G, these are strangely beautiful…and sad in some ways…
Wish I could have photographed the East Village/LES on Halloween. Not that I consider these conditions to be good, but they certainly created an atmosphere never seen in that part of town…
Thanks for sharing…
The moon was pretty bright. On Tuesday it was extremely cloudy but the moon gave a lot of diffuse illumination through the clouds. On Wednesday I think I captured a few stars through the wispy clouds. I really enjoyed taking the time exposures, and I think I’ll be doing more of this, even when the city isn’t blacked out. To see the milky way I think you need to be hundreds of miles away from NYC or have a clear sky, moonless night and a tri-state blackout.
So striking…The moonlight is beautiful.
The crowd on the corner gives it a sci-fi feel…and then there’s that one woman in black facing the camera…
Thanks for sharing these photos. They make me miss NYC even more…
Bet it took a certain amount of guts to walk these streets alone…
What is this light? A fire?
Lights on top of a cop car. It was spooky out there, Irene.
