I rested my camera on the iron fence to get these long exposures in Tompkins Square Park at night.

I’ve not noticed these nuts on other local ginkgos, but this one on Avenue B has them in abundance. They are used in Chinese cooking. In past years I’ve seen Chinese women laying sheets down on the ground and knocking them off with sticks.

I’m glad to report that the arborist apparently agreed with my amateur assessment that this beautiful old elm is still sound enough to leave standing.

Some wind last night brought down a large branch of Tompkins Square Park’c central elm, the large tree in the central lawn of the park. Last year a companion elm slightly south of it came down completely.

It’s a beautiful tree, I hope the park’s department arborists don’t think it needs to come down. It doesn’t appear to be hollow, like the giant elm nearby they removed a month ago.

As usual, EV Grieve got the story first.

Tompkins Square Park, Sunday afternoon. Giant branch from the park’s central elm, fallen in the background.
