This was really heartening, seeing the huge crowd in Foley Square yesterday, estimated at 10,000. Students and Unions came out in support of Occupy Wall Street. Today both Obama and Cuomo expressed “understanding” of the Occupy Wall Street movement. NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the protesters are legally allowed in the park. Music from the Hungry March Band and The Rude Mechanical Orchestra.
I had a delay in putting this up, Time Warner Cable has been down in my neighborhood for a day and a half. It felt like I was in the Dark Ages.
Steve decided to come to Occupy Wall Street and help out with his first aid skills when he realized that people were getting injured in the Troy Davis and Union Square marches.
“Mic-check” is what they call this method of communicating to a crowd without amplification. One person shouts out “Mic-check” and those around know to repeat each statement, hopefully projecting the information all around, so that everyone understands what is being said. Bullhorns and other amplified sound requires a hard-to-get permit. This is so much more pleasant and participatory than getting shouted at with a bullhorn.
Liberty Plaza, Day 16. An occupier of the Madison, Wisconsin Capitol visits Occupy Wall Street. His message is “jobs, jobs, jobs.”
You may notice that my latest videos have much better sound quality. This is because I am now using an MP3 recorder as a mic and syncing that recording to my video file in post. I would have done this earlier if I had known that my MP3 player could actually do high quality recording. Out of the box, it defaults to a low bit rate .wav file, and I never saw the settings to bring it up to a 128 MP3. I’d previously tried doing this with my piece of crap Sony mini disc recorder, which is so awkward with the wires and idiotic recording contros that it made running the camera and running the recorder at the same time hopeless. I was happy to find out that the timing on the mp3 and the QuickTime file on my camera sync easily with the simple “slate” of me slapping my knee while camera and recorder are rolling.
Liberty Plaza, 14 days into the occupation. The crowd continues to grow, thought some of the people in the crowd were there hoping to see Radiohead. The organizers were hoaxed into thinking they were coming to perform at 4. I asked people about the violent reaction of the cops to last Saturday’s march to Union Square, and what has happened since. The Transit Workers Union joins the protest.
The Granny Peace Brigade was there as well as Code Pink.
