Lucky

The Lucky variety store on Clinton street is closed. I never shopped there very much, but I am less likely to shop in whatever boutique is going to replace it.
Dear Friends and Customers of LUCKY, It is with a touch of sadness that we are announcing the closing of LUCKY. We will be closing at the end of October
2010. Since opening LUCKY in l979 we have grown attached to this community as well as to our fellow merchants on Clinton Street and the vicinity. Over the past 30 years, we have weathered through tough economic and social times (9-11) and celebrated happy events as well (Puerto Rican DayParade). We have seen fads and fashions come and go including some that return again (fluorescent earrings, black rubber bands, echo keychains, gold nugget rings). We will never forget all the memories of our customers who have become like family. lt never ceases to amaze us when we see the childrcn who have grown up to bring their own children to shop at the store.
We will begin a liquidation of the stock in the store, as well as some of the showcases and display furniture. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our past and present employees, without whose help, our store wouldn’t be what is today. Thank you for your patronage.
Sincerely,
LUCKY Co. Inc.
I used free-ocr.com to get the above text from a notice on the window. It helped a lot though I had to do several correction.

Essex Street Market – Open Sundays
Thursday, November 4th, 2010
The Essex Street Market – 120 Essex Street – Open: Monday through Saturday 8 am to 7 pm. Open Sundays beginning November 7, 2010 from 10 am to 6 pm.
The greens at the Essex Farm Fruit and Produce (northern-most section) are the freshest and most varied. I like the mustard greens and arugula.
They also have a large selection of spices, at very good prices.
Batista Mini Market (the southern-most section) often has the best prices. I got 15 limes for a dollar there the other day. Chayote (squash), Sour Orange (naranja ácida), Green Plantains (starchy), Yellow Plantains (sweet)
Viva Fruits and Vegetables (the middle section) has a great selection of exotic roots.
Yuca (also called Cassava or Manioc), Yauctia Cica (yautía), Malanga Coco (big taro), Yellow Yauctia, Batata (Sweet Potato).

The type on the new scanner ballots is extremely tiny. Unless you are under 18 and can’t vote anyway, you will need some sort of magnification to read the ballot. The workers have plastic magnifying sheets available for you. Also make sure you flip the ballot over to vote on term limits.
