Ujin Lee – Howl Festival 2010

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Unloading a truck load of 733 unique and individually wrapped 7x7x7 boxes, artist UJIN LEE will begin her 3 ½ hour performance art piece at 11AM in the center of Tompkins Square Park. All boxes will be individually gift-wrapped in traditional Korean fabric. The number 733 represents good luck and fortune. Once all boxes have been strategically placed, and the performance piece is ended, members of the public will be welcome to select a box and take one home.

  1. I want to know what was in the one you chose. Thanks for the video!

  2. I haven’t opened it, joujou.

  3. so you’re never going to open it?

  4. Never is a long time, but at least until I get tired of it taking up so much space.

  5. Open it! Stop it, stop the waiting!
    :0)

Anyway, yeah, thanks for the videos, very interesting. Gotta say I found the little girl kicking the boxes to be kinda annoying.

And when I read "young anarchists" I thought you were talking about those kids that seem to take the bus into town around spring and stay around for the summer asking for change…LOL. Man, I am so out of the loop with everything in this town…

  6. Yeah, the artist wasn’t amused by her either, but the rules of the piece were only subtly presented with only two letter sized notices on the lawn (You had to lean down to read them) and no representative was there informing the masses of the schedule: ie. let the boxes be until 5 and then choose a box for yourself. Bad planning on her part. I was too beat to stick around for the real end of the piece, the mass opening of the boxes. The cloth covering the boxes was lovely and could not have been cheap. Each box was tied with varied knots and styles.

My "young anarchist" statement was intentionally deceptive.

  7. Yeah, the cloth and bows look so lovely…And your pix of them are so nice…

  8. Beautiful capture !
I loved the piece , also.

  9. Lovely !

  10. Why not post it at "Tompkins Square Park" group ?

  11. Good idea Kevin.

  12. Yeah, I did too, it was the hightlight of Festival as far as I’m concerned.
