Brandie Bailey Ghost Bike Returns
Friday, April 23rd, 2010
The cops clipped locks and carted off all the bikes along Houston Street for Obama’s motorcade up and down Houston Street when he spoke at Cooper Union the other day. Someone retrieved the bike, but the memorial plaque is gone.
Why dd they move all the bikes? Surely this is unnecessary waste of public money? (As well as – in this case – being an act of vandalism).
Mindless security theater, as far as I’m concerned.

Geez, were they concerned that Obama might be scared of a ghost bike? Honestly, the silliness amazes me. I can’t wrap my head around it.
The city/Bloomberg was probably just looking for an excuse to take down the bikes, as they are an ever-present reminder of the poor urban planning and non-bike friendly policies of this town…
What needs to be done to get a new plaque for Brandie Bailey? I just wrote to the ghost bike visual resistance to ask them. Does anyone know?
I know that this bike is decorated with flowers, cards, etc. two or three times a year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought a new plaque for the next ceremony. Today May 5, 2010 is the fifth anniversary of her death.
