The inner entrance gate to the New York Marble Cemetery off Second Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Streets in the East Village. This was during Open House New York.
The back of the cemetery is preserved much as it was before the restoration. You are not allowed to touch any of the walls as much of the mortar has deteriorated to sand. The walls were repaired with whatever was available over the years.
The cemetery is available for weddings and events. You can get it for the day at the price of a rushed half hour in Central Park. Personally, I would be too much be imagining cracking the stone slab covering the vault entrances while doing the Hokey Pokey.
On the right you can see a bit of the old marble slabs embedded into the wall identifying the location of family vaults.
A portion of the wall has collapsed, the portion separating the cemetery from the Men’s Shelter. Late night parties are rumored.
