To tell the truth, I’m more amused than outraged. Seeing her laying her shopping bag and expensive handbag down on the damp pavement, and her crouching to peel off this piece. It’s just funny. Her friend was saying that she’s a friend of these street artists and a curator of their work. I don’t know MBW, other than the pieces he just put up over the past couple of day, if it was a Swoon, then I’d be pissed.
there is a guy named J.S.G. Boggs who makes handmade dollar bills going around his neighborhood hoping merchants would accept his dollar bills in exchange for goods and services. he would also receive change, and a receipt for those goods and services.
closely following this artist were collectors who go around looking for those Boggs dollar bills, attempting to buy them at a higher value… a $10 hand-drawn note that Boggs himself transacted for $10 worth of goods and services would then be worth $1000 to an art collector.
the value in art comes in many forms. for that artist, the value came when the art was placed into circulation and exchanged hands.
street art is that way too. art is placed on the street, gains (street) credibility, and becomes an object of value.
lucky dog,
i don’t think that anyone is arguing that the work isnt valuable, i think its pretty obvious that it is.
but just because something is valuable and there for the taking does not mean its free, nor does it mean its supposed to be taken.
i found this sentence on her page particularly poignant
"Art is everywhere, not just in galleries and museums. These art treasures are free if we just take notice."
that’s only true if you can see it on the street because no one ganked it when it was raining for their own personal collection.
her "contact me/mailing list" page has no way of contacting her on it…
This was one of the most interesting threads to read! I found the same quote that guero posted above, not only true but it pretty much explains her moves. Hence, it’s free for her to take. Not cool with me!
I’m pretty sure this is Natalie Kates, who really should know better– she’s curated streetart shows. I think she really should apologize to the community.
Evidence: check out her photo here: web.mac.com/nataliekates/NatalieKates/About_Me.html and the other stuff here: https://www.nataliekates.com/
I think it’s kinda a bummer when people take down this stuff. NYC doesn’t have an apparent hardcore graffiti removal program yet so people feel like things on the street are up for grabs. They just don’t understand what it’s about and maybe it’s a way for them to feel involved by actually taking something street art-esque off the street. I personally get kinda bothered when I know something was taken on purpose, but at the same time there isn’t really any way to stop someone except if you catch them in the act. Either that or use something more permanent like I don’t know…. paint? If you haven’t noticed tons of stuff has been cleaned up by the city in the last month, lots of things are gone and it’s looking boring. Maybe if there was a hardcore city-wide buff here people would understand much more how this stuff needs to stay up.
Stop the collector Buff!
the work that got put up is subject to the elements. it’s also subject to annoying people like this. besides, unless the work is legal & commissioned, you just have to deal with noobs like this.
Saw her too. Disgusting.
Jeez! How many did she take?
one imagines people like this, but to actually see this behavior is stunning.
oh shit– my man MBW is going to put a cap in her ass!

that’s such a flimsy lie.
if she’s actually a friend/curator then why not get work directly from the source?
if she is friends with them why would she take their stuff off the street. where the artist put it? it makes no sense.
its like buffing the artist.
Lame.
Yeah, sounded pretty fishy to me, as well.
MBW should use better paste
maybe mix it with some glass shards splasher style!
You put it between the corrugated cardboard, seen on the right.
that’s actually pretty deviously clever! i wonder if she only steals when it rains!
i wonder how MBW feels about this…
That IS devious. But still lame.
her "personal art collection"
web.mac.com/nataliekates/NatalieKates/My_Collection.html
ha, she also offers advice on "where and how to start or build upon your art collection"!
Noo leave it there! Ah well the good thing is that it reopens the wall to someone else…that Spock one is hilarious!

very very funny
I guess it comes with the territory, but i would rather see plenty of other folks nabbing a piece this way than this "fan"
she looks so drunk on happiness
@ gaia
in her personal collection I spotted your horse man. did she rob you too?
ah no that was for her
yeah thats about to fall off… i would be tempted myself.

it’s definitively her…follow the money as a certain someone said to me yesterday in relation to these shots
She’s doing the current show at Factory Fresh: web.mac.com/nataliekates/NatalieKates/Home/Entries/2008/9…
does she sell stolen works?
this should get interesting…
You nailed it, jake. That’s her.
natalie kates?
my question is what can you do with a wet MBW poster half covered in paste? that’s got to be pretty hard to stick in your Fendi bag!
It wasn’t falling off when she started. She patiently worked on it for about ten minutes. It was damp from all the rain.

P.S. All the MBW stuff in Nolita is gone.
maybe MBW told his friend natalie kate she could take them all…
It’s like if every scuba diver on Palancar Reef off Cozumel broke off a chunk of coral, soon there would be no reef, a tragic hole in the eco-system.

She took this a few minutes after I pasted it:
well, she admits she loves MBW: web.mac.com/nataliekates/NatalieKates/Home/Entries/2008/9…
The saga continues, thanks for the update Jake.
