The Open Voting Consortium (OVC), a nonprofit group with several Bay Area members, recently announced the development of touchscreen voting machine software that uses open source and creates a voter verified paper trail. Recently completed, the software is set to be publicly tested this Thursday, April 1, at the Santa Clara County government offices in San Jose.
OVC’s system, currently in software form only, can be used on regular desktop PCs hooked up to a touchscreen monitor and a standard printer. Like the touchscreen machines now in use, the OVC unit records the vote electronically. But unlike Diebold’s machines, the OVC system also automatically produce a paper receipt, which is intended to be the official tally. To ensure accuracy, the paper count is then reconciled against the electronic one stored on the machines. Via Linkfilter

The organization leave a bit to be desired, but if you are persistent you most likely will find a thumbnail image of whatever building you are looking for. It’s part of the Virtual Reality NYC database

A reporter aplologizes for swallowing the US government line in its rush to war in Iraq.
“.. there were some who acted as little more than cogs in the White House propaganda machine.”
“Most disturbing of all, some of these journalists still don’t get it. When Massing asked the Times’ Miller–an investigative reporter covering intelligence–why she didn’t include more comments in her stories by experts who contested White House assertions, she replied: “My job isn’t to assess the government’s information and be an independent intelligence analyst myself. My job is to tell readers of The New York Times what the government thought about Iraq’s arsenal.”"
“By neglecting to fully employ their critical-thinking faculties, Miller and many of her colleagues in the elite print media not only failed their readers during the countdown to the Iraq invasion, they failed our democracy.” By RICK MERCIER - The Free Lance-Star
