Famous Monsters

Tats cru thankfully painted over their last mural, which emulated insipid art from the psychedelic 60′s, with some monsters in time for Halloween. Here’s two of my favorites: Karloff’s Frankenstein monster and Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.

The latest Tats Cru mural on East Second Street has been written over. “Mujeres” means “women” in Spanish. Thanks to epicharmus for the translation.

Tats Ad?

I guess I’m just falling into whatever marketing campaign this is, but I’m a sucker for craft and sweet line. There is no doubt of the skill of Tats Cru. But so far they all turn out to be ads of one sort or another. Even that great surveillance mural had some tie in with some stupid celebrity reality show. At least it’s not for Hummers this time.

Privacy might seem like an odd desire for these professional graffiti muralists whose works adorn everything from bodegas and medical vans to playgrounds and public schools. But they have been serious about controlling their work ever since a number of their aerosol tableaus were photographed â€” without their permission â€” for a book and an exhibit on the murals of New York City.

Tats Cru and a dozen other similarly aggrieved artists have joined to seek a settlement from Peter Rosenstein, a photographer who spent more than a decade shooting pictures of their work and included the photos in his book, â€œTattooed Walls.â€ As a result of the artistsâ€™ complaints, the University Press of Mississippi, the publisher, removed the book from its catalog a month after its release last year. – NY Times

Surveillance Eye

As much crap as I give Tats Cru for their obnoxious commercial clients (Hummer etc.). There is no denying their skill. This piece, on the same wall that that infamous Hummer ad appeared, is pretty sweet and as far as I can tell it is non-commercial.

Ragging Tats Cru Graffadi Again.

“Impeach King George’s War.”The grammar is a bit wonky but you get the idea. This is the same spot as the infamous “Street Art Hummer.”

The ragging has been painted away leaving a faint palimpsest.

Spray Painting a mural on East Second Street.

Not sure where it is going with this monster SUV. It’s well rendered, but is it foul product placement?

Update May 29 – “by gas Support Bush” Spelling’s a bit wonky but you get the idea. The tats cru hummer ad, titled “Street Art” is getting ragged.

Tats Cru performed a miraculous pristine restoration of this commercial mural after it was marked up with red spray paint (inset) about ten days ago. Second Street and Avenue A.
