I’ve been neglecting to post much street art here on the GammaBlog of late, but I have not stopped taking photos. Here’s a selection of a photo from each month of 2013.
January: The 13 Portals project placed painting such as this and wild performances through much of the year.
February: Jim Power has been busy with his lamp post mosaics. His latest work is full of historical details about the locations. This one celebrates Minsky Bros. Burlesk.
March: Welcome to the future, where you will buy your designer air by the bottle. These clever faux ads have been around for a couple of years, I don’t know who is behind them.April: Stikman continues to be one of my favorite street artists. I haven’t seen much of his work in the past year. This one made from an old computer punch card was the only new one I’ve seen in this neighborhood in 2013.
May: Postal Stickers continue to provide low cost sticker fodder for young street artists.
August: This one made me mad at first as it was molesting one of my precious Tompkins Square Park trees. But it turned out that the damage was nil, as it was not nailed in or such, and it soon was removed.
September: Just a funny spray paint doodle on the Bowery.
October: Nice colorful hitchhiker from RAE on the Lower East Side.
November: Something from Cecilia on First Avenue, that’s all I know.December: I was so happy to catch this tiny work from another favorite artist Elbow Toe. It’s the first non-text piece by him that I’ve seen in the wilds in years.
This bit of a street art installation jarred me at first, screwing with my precious trees. But as you can see below it was minimally invasive, being made out of carved recycled styrofoam, form fit to the existing void in the tree. I think I see some white glue, but no nails or hard attachments.
A few days later the bottom teeth were torn out. On the back it read, “You suck if you stole me.”
