12/27/99 Bulldozers at the Gate of the Esperanza Garden

Read the Press Release

The frog shaped tree-house called El Coqui after the Puerto Rican national symbol. Folks sleep in it, phone at hand, to be ready in case of a surprise attack.

The Gardeners and Friends Gather early Monday morning, prepared to resist.

The delicate but sturdy structure of this tower made of welded rebar does not show up well on these captures from my video camera, as it is obscured by the tree limbs. It is about 25 feet high and has a metal seat adorned with golden flower petals welded to the top. The gardeners plan on having someone chain themselves to the top of it, if the cops and bulldozers come.

The welded framework of this tower was assembled in a night.
