A protest organized by Gary Null in front of Governor Cuomo’s office in Manhattan to close Indian Point and stop Hydro-fracking.

Crowd at the Protest

Indian Point has more nuclear waste stored on site than Fukushima and is similarly vulnerable to a disruption of the electrical grid. One big worry is the possibility of another Carrington Event. We are approaching the cyclical solar max in 2012-2013, this combined with the weakening of the earth’s protective magnetic shield could bring down our power grid (frying hard to replace transformers) for many months, leaving us without communication, heating, cooling, water, food, transportation etc. Gary has the details of this on this article: Gary Null, PhD, and Jeremy Stillman” – Solar Storms: Katrina Times 1,000?

Hydro-fracking is a ridiculous scheme to trade our clean water for a pitiful amount of natural gas. It involves injecting toxic chemicals into the ground. It needs to be stopped. Go solar, wind and tidal power.

Grannies and Veterans Civil Disobedience 2010/12/16/grannies-and-veterans-civil-disobedience/ 2010/12/16/grannies-and-veterans-civil-disobedience/#comments Fri, 17 Dec 2010 04:01:01 +0000 gamma ?p=6007
Afghan war protest. Several grannies and veterans peacefully stop traffic on Seventh Avenue outside the Times Square recruiting station and were arrested. Several of the older women could barely walk. It was bitterly cold. Though the Times Square recruiting station is beneath the windows of ABC News there was no mainstream media coverage of this protest. The only professional camera I saw there was from Chinese television. This morning I could find nothing on Google News about this. The White House protest yesterday where 131 people were arrested received minimal news coverage as well. More info on the Catholic Workers Group

57th and Sixth 2009/09/28/57th-and-sixth/ 2009/09/28/57th-and-sixth/#comments Mon, 28 Sep 2009 13:47:00 +0000 gamma ?p=5353 57th-and-Sixth
The Crown Building at 57th and Fifth is glowing in the background. The search for a name for this building led me to thecityreview.com a website by Carter B. Horsley. It seems to have comprehensive coverage of notable architecture of Manhattan (mostly midtown and above). I don’t know how I’ve not come across it before. The site should be very useful to me for the blog.

Election Night in Times Square 2008/11/05/election-night-in-times-square/ 2008/11/05/election-night-in-times-square/#comments Wed, 05 Nov 2008 20:06:16 +0000 gamma ?p=4594
Election Night on Times Square from GammaBlog on Vimeo.

November 4th, 2008. In the area around the Army recruiting station, ABC has several large video screens and their news center. A large crowd of what was probably 99% Obama supporters spontaneously gathered to watch the election results together. I included three clips from Obama’s victory speech, dubbed over the video.

Times Square is the traditional place for New Yorkers to gather for the observance and marking of big events. I knew there would be the large video displays of the election results, that it would be bright enough there for my camera to shoot video. Around 9:30 when I could see that the results would tip soon, I took the F train to Times Square.

For the most part the crowd could not hear what was being said on the screens. I was able to hear the speeches with my trusty battery powered portable transistor radio, way out-of-sync with the various video feeds displayed around me. I’m surprised no one in that large crowd thought to bring a boombox. It was interesting being there, but there was little cohesion to the crowd. Video was flashing 360 degrees. Animated Budweiser ads displayed over the NBC feed all night. The ABC camera crane swooped over our heads, generating random screams and waves at the camera at intervals. I’m glad I was there to witness history, and get this video, but it would have been good to hear the speeches along with a crowd actually listening to the words. ABC had a sound system that boomed out over the street, but it must have been highly directional. It was only a muffled background cadence when I was a half-block away.

Irene Roxanne has posted this truly joyous video she shot from her bike of the spontaneous crowd in Union Square. The downtown crowd showed much more energy than the media driven and police cordoned crowd midtown.

ROBOHAMLET 2008/04/20/robo-hamlet/ 2008/04/20/robo-hamlet/#comments Sun, 20 Apr 2008 11:05:30 +0000 gamma ?p=4343

ROBOHAMLET is a play about the extinction of the human race at the claws of their own creations, the Crylons, genetically modified crabs created to make a caviar substitute, whose incredible fecundity has overwhelmed their human creators. The last humans make a brave stand, and the only weapon that can stand between them an annihilation of humanity is the Robot, who carries the burden of human culture, recites Shakespeare, and feels ambivalent.

ROBOHAMLET is written by Pat Harper, who was House Manager of Theater for the New City from 1999 until 2006, and is not only a barbed commentary on humanity in general but also on off-off Broadway theater and its denizens.
