  1. Thank you so much for this glimpse of the love and community that poured out to celebrate Michael on Sunday. I was sad not to be there for the celebration of this stellar human being.

I was fortunate to share a space with him in the early days of 209 and then stir things up with him to keep the green alive in the city in ’99, and sing together. And El Jardin is the community garden where I played and touched the earth – so it was wonderful to see the celebration, friends – human and plant and birds gathered there. And the willow – what timing – perhaps we can plant a new tree there for Michael – a fruit bearing tree! That was what Michael did for so many!

Interesting article with more info. on his life’s work. I looked through a few of the comments too, interesting reading about people reminiscing on his life.

  3. Thanks for the link to that article. Yeah, he seems like an interesting character, I don’t think I ever met him.

  4. I don’t know if I ever met him either, but I have clear memories of being very involved in some of those squatter protests back in the 90′s – I even would go up and ask police how they felt about it and they would actually be fairly sympathetic, saying they were just doing what they were told to do. I remember Ghouliani had these 2 police helicopters that were like military helicopters (NYPD had more military hardware than some small countries), and seeing one of those hovering over various protests. I went in many of those squats, amazing how much work people had put into making the place not only livable, but amazingly comfortable as well, and much safer structurally than the abandoned buildings that were slowly collapsing, places they occupied and fixed up.

  5. Michael u will b missed very much. The fight will go on with the gardens and we not let the abc school get the little patr of the garden they claim is theirs. It cannot happen and will not .
