Iz the Wiz by nohj coley

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is in Chinatown near where Swoon used to paste. When I first saw this piece I was happy thinking she was shaking up her style, and had not completely abandoned pasting in Manhattan. But sabeth718 on Flickr let me know that it was by nohj coley

Iz the Wiz

. My google fu had already located iz the wiz, a NYC graffiti artist, recently deceased from the signature on the trains below.  It is  a lovely piece, it has a real presence, and the placement on the rusty girder is sweet.

Manhattan, at least since 11 Spring got buffed, has been second or third rate in terms of NYC  street art.  It’s all going on in Brooklyn. At least as far as I can tell from Luna Park’s stream on Flickr.

  1. this is nohj coley’s portrait of iz the wiz.

  2. Thanks sabeth718. The train track motif, the fact that it is a portrait of a graff artist, it’s quirky placement, and the Chinatown location where Swoon used to haunt, led me astray. I’ll have to check coley out, I like this piece.

things have slowed down a bit recently, but brooklyn is definitely more active than manhattan at the moment…

  6. Thanks Luna. I little ventured outside of Manhattan this year and the street art here was mostly not from local talent. I mean for sure this borough is not affordable to young artists. With few exceptions only out-of-towners paste here now.
