Iz the Wiz by nohj coley

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is in Chinatown near where Swoon used to paste. When I first saw this piece I was happy thinking she was shaking up her style, and had not completely abandoned pasting in Manhattan. But sabeth718 on Flickr let me know that it was by nohj coley

Iz the Wiz

. My google fu had already located iz the wiz, a NYC graffiti artist, recently deceased from the signature on the trains below.  It is  a lovely piece, it has a real presence, and the placement on the rusty girder is sweet.

Manhattan, at least since 11 Spring got buffed, has been second or third rate in terms of NYC  street art.  It’s all going on in Brooklyn. At least as far as I can tell from Luna Park’s stream on Flickr.

Shastone Monuments by Haskel
A blast from the past. An old sign, for a Jewish tombstone parlor no longer there, had been draped with contemporary ads for several years.

Samantha in her Tree

Samantha in her Tree
Samantha’s tree is now bare of leaves, but she is still pretty good at avoiding giving a good shot to this paparazzo. I think she is able to hear my camera’s electronic clicks and beeps and she scoots as soon as I approach. But I am very happy to see that she is still living in the Marble Cemetery on Second Street. Click her tag below to learn more about this rescued raven.

Shepard Fairey’s Obey Giant logo is hidden by the Heart NY poster, clever placement.
