These characters remind me of something you would see in a Hayao Miyazaki film, like the great Spirited Away. Can anyone tell me if they are traditional Japanese folk characters? On St. Mark’s Place in the East Village.

I can’t help you with the lettering, but I’d love to know why the owl has boobs.
My guess is that the owl has boobs, because the owl is a bear.
I have never been able to figure out that red-eyed bear thing in the sombrero…or the creepy old lady on the sign.
Someone on my blog suggested that the bearlike creature on the right is an owl with boobs. But aside from that, your comment is the most informative, Goggla.
Now that I look again, it could be an owl…but it has big ears and appears to have an arm with which it’s holding a bag (?). The nips are disturbing…and is that a bellybutton? This belongs in the Met.
the creature is a badger, it’s called Tenuki (spelling?) and it’s sort of
a patron spirit of bars and drinking. This info may be slightly off,
but much closer than saying it’s an owl with boobs!
Thanks so much, snoopy.
