Ghost Bike
May 8, 2007 the second anniversary of Brandie Bailey’s death.
Brandie Bailey Memorial

Ghost Bike
A couple of days later someone used the left-behind chalk to leave the message. “Died on Fixed Bike.” There is some controversy concerning the safety of fixed gear bikes, braking is accomplished by pedaling in reverse. This seems a harsh thing to say at her memorial, seemingly blaming her choice of transportation on the accident. All chalk messages were gone the next day, after a heavy rain.

  1. I was wondering where exactly that happened.. she was pretty popular in the NYC/NJ hardcore scene.

  2. Great shot.

  3. Beautiful tribute to a fallen biker.

  4. I have riden lots of bikes, including those with ‘fixed wheels’ (as it is called in the UK). The fixed wheel does take a particular skill set but encourages a more fluid pedalling style.

I have fallen off many times, and sometimes it really hurts.

However in my experience, serious injury requires interaction with a motorised vehicle.

Therefore the chalk message seems off beam as well as insensitive.

  5. Thanks for your insight on this, TT.

  6. fixed gear bikes are designed for the velodrome. But lots of people ride them on the street.
