Yeah, this morning while going along Houston it occurred to me how strange it is to see so many ghost bikes on that one street….I’ve heard folks refer to Houston as the Boulevard of Death…
i was actually thinking about this the other day as well…
i thought that as a result of the death on houston st near laguardia (?) that construction firms were supposed to paint all the large metal plates with anti slip paint…
i recall seeing some of that go down last year, but this year all the serious construction/street repair sites seem to have un-painted metal plate.
any intel on that?
I hadn’t heard about that, Adam. I don’t bike anywhere near as much as I used to. The main thoroughfares are just too dangerous. Manhattan is insanely congested. I mostly use my bike when I want to roam around Brooklyn. ’tis sad.
i still sometimes enjoy biking ‘cross town instead of walking, but i almost *never* take houston street. too much perma-construction and crazy drivers.
spring or prince have their fair share of pedestrian dangers with between parked cars departing jay-walkers on cellies and or ipodded to dodge… but i’ll take my chances. cars and trucks…. not so much!
[and irony of ironies is that the storefront on houston street is where the times up! group does lots of their work out of]

Yeah, Third and 4th Streets aren’t too bad for crosstown. And the West side bike path is cool if, out of the way for practical travel. But I know of no safe way to get uptown on the East Side. Arrrgh!
