Chernobyl – Ghost Town

Chernobyl – Ghost Town

Many Photos.

Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster

On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World’s worst nuclear power
accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). The
Chernobyl nuclear power plant located 80 miles north of Kiev had 4 reactors
and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were
disregarded. At 1:23am the chain reaction in the reactor became out
of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor’s
heavy steel and concrete lid.

The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately,
and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile
radius, 135,00 people had to be evacuated.

Washington DC – Anti-War Demonstration

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

Panorama of the crowd at the speaker's stage
As always at large demonstrations it is impossible to get a photo that shows how many people are there. This is a shot of the crowd in front of the speakers stage. More people were already marching on the street heading for the Whitehouse and other people were scattered beneath the Washington Monument and around the mall in general. There was a music stage that I didn’t see at all.

Noisy helicopters flew fairly low over the crowd.

“George Bush does not speak for me!”

Get out of our house!

Even though we knew Bush was not at home (he was hiding in Colorado), we had a good time shouting “get out of our house” and “shame on you” at the Whitehouse.

Signs
“Buddha not Bush” “Bring the Troops OM” and the perennial “Mad Cowboy Disease.”

Cops Unplug Cindy Sheehan

NYPD Unplugs Cindy Sheehan
City’s Finest pulls move even Bush wouldn’t have tried

Cindy Sheehan may be the Rosa Parks of the anti-war movement. But that didn’t stop members of the New York Police Department from marching into the crowd of about 150 people gathered in Union Square Monday to hear her speak and yanking away the microphone.

The NYPD pulled the plug just as Sheehan was calling on the audience not to lose heart in the fight to end the war in Iraq.

“We get up every morning, and every morning we see this enormous mountain in front of us,” said Sheehan, speaking on behalf of the other parents and family members of fallen soldiers who have taken up the crusade to bring the troops home.

“We can’t go through it, we can’t go under it, so we have to go over it,” she continued, just as the cops rushed the makeshift podium.

Outside one house on Kentucky Street, a member of the Army 82nd Airborne Division summoned a reporter and photographer standing nearby and told them that if they took pictures or wrote a story about the body recovery process, he would take away their press credentials and kick them out of the state.

Cheney Diverted Power from Hospitals to Pipeline

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

Power crews diverted Restoring pipeline came first
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina roared through South Mississippi knocking out electricity and communication systems, the White House ordered power restored to a pipeline that sends fuel to the Northeast.

That order – to restart two power substations in Collins that serve Colonial Pipeline Co. – delayed efforts by at least 24 hours to restore power to two rural hospitals and a number of water systems in the Pine Belt.

F.A.A. Alerted on Qaeda in ’98, 9/11 Panel Said

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

F.A.A. Alerted on Qaeda in ’98, 9/11 Panel Said
American aviation officials were warned as early as 1998 that Al Qaeda could “seek to hijack a commercial jet and slam it into a U.S. landmark,” according to previously secret portions of a report prepared last year by the Sept. 11 commission. The officials also realized months before the Sept. 11 attacks that two of the three airports used in the hijackings had suffered repeated security lapses.

Federal Aviation Administration officials were also warned in 2001 in a report prepared for the agency that airport screeners’ ability to detect possible weapons had “declined significantly” in recent years, but little was done to remedy the problem, the Sept. 11 commission found.

The White House and many members of the commission, which has completed its official work, have been battling for more than a year over the release of the commission’s report on aviation failures, which was completed in August 2004.
