Colonnade Row

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

LaGrange Terrace (Colonnade Row) 1833. It is a New York version of Regent’s Park in London, with columns built by Sing Sing prisoners. It originally consisted of nine houses, of which only four remain today. When first built the houses were occupied by social bright lights of the era such as the Astors and Vanderbilts. nyc-architecture.com - Lafayette Street

“These four houses constitute the remaining portion of a colonnade of nine. Originally named La Grange Terrace after the country seat of the Marquis De Lafayette. When constructed in 1831 by Seth Geer, this was considered the finest row of private dwellings in the city. Its residents have included John Jacob Astor and Washington Irving.” From the plaque erected in 1963 by the New York Community Trust.

Charlie and His Orchestra

Thursday, March 10th, 2005
Charlie and His Orchestra
Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda minister, assembled a fairly competent swing band called Charlie and His Orchestra to perform Nazified versions of the jazz hits of the day. Led by an English speaking German, Karl Schwendler, Charlie and His Orchestra broadcast on the medium-wave and short-wave bands throughout the 1930s to Canada, the US and Britain.
