The Year of the Rooster

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

Red Lion. The Dragon Parade this past Sunday, marked the end of Chinese Lunar New Year Celebrations in New York’s Chinatown.

These confetti guns, going for five bucks a pop, were a lot of fun. They are powered by compressed gas.

It used to be that huge quantities of firecrackers would chase the dragons and lions, as they go from store to restaurant, bowing, greeting and blessing the owners, creating an air of danger real and imagined. Mayor Giuliani put an end to the firecrackers several years ago. I understand that this year they did have a firecracker ceremony on Feb 9. I wasn’t there, but I’m sure it wasn’t the anarchic scene it used to be.

The confetti shoots high into the air. Little kids scatter to capture the red parachute (right) that is packed in with the confetti.

Kids playing with mylar streamers.

I don’t know where else you could shoot off these things. They could seriously mess up your back yard or living room.

A golden dragon. The dragon and lion puppets are danced by members of local martial arts organizations. A surprising number of them are non-Asian.

The New MoMA

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

On Friday nights from 4 until 8 PM admission to The Museum of Modern Art is free. Last Friday I arrived at 4. It was very cold, and a chilly, winding, twenty-minute wait in the line. You could try going at 5, and you may be able to get in without much of a line at all. But getting in before sundown is a good idea for the great views of the city through the windows. The museum is located at 11 West 53 Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Architect Yoshio Taniguchi has done a spectacular job of expanding and redesigning the old building. The floor space is now almost double what it was before. These photos were taken on the top floor. I’m assuming this transparent fence has been tested for safety, but it seems too insubstantial to lean against.

Looking over it made my stomach lurch.

But the view is well worth the vertigo.

India Photos

Saturday, February 12th, 2005

See some beautiful photography by Jillian Elizabeth O’Connor from her travels in India last year. I designed her website.

“These Pujaris (a type of priest) were taking a break from preparing over a hundred vessels of food to be offered to the deities in this ancient temple.”

This is the same trip that was recounted in words earlier on the GammaBlaBlog by Citizen One.

Christo from Belvedere

Friday, February 11th, 2005
I wanted to see Christo’s “The Gates” before the unveiling tomorrow. Belvedere Castle could be a great spot to view the spectacle, as it was today, but I suspect it will be packed beyond pleasantry tomorrow. I hope to get to the Park near dawn to observer the crew pre unveiling (set to happen between 8:30 and 11 AM) Click to see a larger version of this mosaic panorama.
More from the castle. They do not seem to have a problem with hand-held photography, but they challenge anyone with a tripod. The castle is owned by the Central Park Conservancy. They sell official “The Gates” merchandise there, and they seem to claim the view as well.
Ice on Belvedere Lake.
