Branding the Nabe

Are these big-eyed ultracute monsters in grade school colors supposed to represent the soul of the Lower East Side? According to their website: “The Lower East Side Business Improvement District was established in 1992 as a nonprofit economic development organization dedicated to revitalizing the Orchard Street Shopping District while preserving its unique and diverse character.” I’m glad the worker’s head is hiding the address of their lame website. These are the folks that put up the “Bargain District” banners, shortly before the old Orchard street stores, and the unique chaos of their Sunday, all weather, all seasons outdoor market began to rapidly disappear, to be replaced with bars and boutiques. More cute monsters.

“Bargain District” street signs. Houston and Allen Streets. The omnipresent Andre the Giant is there as well.

Old pushcart vendor, an LES icon. The descendants of pushcart vendors still held reign on Orchard Street before this PR campaign began.
