Spring Street Starts

Friday, December 31st, 2004
Spring Street starts at the Bowery. The old Germania Bank building, basement vault to roof, is the studio/residence of photographer Jay Maisel. It has been a haven for street art for many years.
Go west one block to Elizabeth Street and you come to the mysterious 11 Spring Street, a long time street art mecca and generally strange old place. Last year it was sold to Lachlan Murdoch, son of right-wing media-mogul Rupert.

Art Over Armageddon

Thursday, December 30th, 2004
This "Let’s Play Armageddon" poster seems to be a favorite to deface quickly. I’ve yet to see one intact. I’m thinking that the stencil of the woman painting the blobular forms is a suble subtle signature of WK studios. Bleecker Street near Bowery.

Snowy Moonset

We had about an inch and a half of snow on the ground by dawn,
yesterday morning. The moon is setting over Houston Street.

Dumpster Peril

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004
Icy cold and snowy, yesterday morning. This poor guy had the job of securing safety mesh over these dumpsters, which required him to precariously balance on the ice encrusted construction waste and the slick steel sides of the dumpster. What a job.

Blackwell Refuses Interview

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004

Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell (also State Chair for the reelection of George W Bush) has requested a protective order to prevent him from being interviewed as part of an unusual court challenge of the presidential vote.

Blackwell, in a court filing, says he’s not required to be interviewed by lawyers as a high-ranking public official, and accused the voters challenging the results of “frivolous conduct” and abusive and unnecessary requests of elections officials around the state.

‘Torture’ Gulfstream jet an open secret This Gulfstream V turbojet–a plane favored by corporate excecutives–has scoured the world, from Pakistan to Indonesia to Jordan, sometimes being boarded by hooded and handcuffed passengers, the registration-restricted Washington Post reports Monday.

The plane’s owner of record, Premier Executive Transport Services Inc., lists directors and officers who appear to exist only on paper. And each one of those directors and officers has a recently issued Social Security number and an address consisting only of a post office box, according to an extensive search of state, federal and commercial records.

Trash Weaving

Saturday, December 25th, 2004
Someone is weaving random bits of trash into the fence on East First Street near Bowery. My flash reveals an unexpected sculptural quality at night.
In daylight it’s less sculptural and more like a filthy sidewalk, but closer to your face than usual.
Further east on East First Street, more stuffed trash. Plus another one of those faces.
