The flag, in front of this public school on Avenue B, has been at half-staff since the Reagan funeral. As much as my first instincts assumed this excess to be yet another cynical exploitation of the Republican saint, 30 days is the assigned time of half-mast for the death of a president. Bush did rescind the order for the July 4th weekend, but it seems like it was a last minute thing (the first article linked above, dated July 4th, talks about some local governments taking it upon themselves to raise the flag full-staff for the 4th), and this school seems caught unawares. |

Tattered Flag on Avenue B. I suspect this one never made it to half-staff. "Many people don’t know the U.S. Code rules governing flag etiquette, said Marge Wilson, manager of the United Veterans Club. Sometimes, she’ll see old, tattered flags displayed — not considered appropriate according to U.S. Code, she said." |
