Bowery Bike

Wednesday, November 26th, 2003
I went over the river and poked around Williamsburg and DUMBO hoping to find more of Swoon’s new series of woodblock prints. But it wasn’t until I came back over the Manhattan bridge that I found one. Grand Street and Bowery, It’s applied to the iron walls of a news stand. I love the way it is grounded. That is, it gives the illusion that the rider is actually on the ground.
She somehow applied color to this print. I haven’t figured out what technique. It could be as simple as hand painting then printing over it. But I had a hard enough time getting this photo, without getting run down on Grand Street, to risk any additional time analyzing it.

REVS Metal

I really like this REVS sculpture welded to what looks like the iron frame of a former loading dock on Water Street in DUMBO.

Carrol Gardens Dandelion

Wednesday, November 26th, 2003
I made a wrong turn somewhere along my way from Williamsburg to DUMBO and ended up in Carrol Gardens where I found this remarkable papercut. A dandelion? I suspect it is Swoon’s work, but am not sure. Butler Street near Bond Street. (I have since found out it is not Swoon but a friend of her’s, whose work is often confused with her’s.)

New Swoon

I just caught sight of one of Swoon’s new series of woodcut prints. I’ll have to take a tour of her ususal haunts to see if I can find more. I love the way she has kept the pure, raw, drawn lines of her recent street portraits, and mixed in the interior graphic, story-telling elements she had in her great papercut series. Houston Street near Suffolk Street. Lower East Side.Click
