Coming ‘Round the Bend

Friday, November 14th, 2003

As predicted here comes a sunspot, recorded today, just coming into view on the nearside of the sun. Spaceweather.com says “Sunspot 484, which unleashed a number of X-class solar flares last month, has returned. It is peeking over the sun’s northeastern limb. Image credit: SOHO MDI.” But the SOHO site labels it as sunspot 501. The sun has been extraordinarily active of late, it’s worth keeping an eye on it.
Japanese satellites were knocked out by this solar activity last month. “Nothing’s wrong,” said David Hathaway, a solar physicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. “These latest sunspots were whoppers,” Hathaway said, “but sunspot counts averaged over many weeks are still declining as predicted. We’re still on course for a solar minimum in 2006.” Report on Space.com
