Onion Balls
Thursday, October 23rd, 2003Search Between the Covers
Thursday, October 23rd, 2003Kudos to Amazon for their new word and phrase search inside the covers of 120,000 participating books. Apparently some of the books were optically scanned. I suppose Amazon got other publishers to participate and give their electronic text to Amazon for this project. Via this posting on MeFi.
Sunspots
Thursday, October 23rd, 2003| “An explosion near giant sunspot 484 on Oct. 22nd hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME, pictured above) toward Earth. Forecasters expect it to arrive on Oct. 24th and possibly trigger a strong geomagnetic storm…sunspot 484 unleashed an X1-flare on Oct 19th, and sunspot 486 produced an M9-flare (almost X-class) on Oct. 22nd. Further eruptions are possible as they rotate across the face of the sun over the next two weeks.” From Spaceweather.com
Sunspot 484 is pictured in the animation below. Sunspot 486 was not directly facing the earth when it produced this CME. The animation above is over a seven hour period. |
Sunspot
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2003|
Four day animation of rapidly growing sunspot. It is now the size of the planet Jupiter. There is a possibility of an X-class solar flare from such a sunspot. An X-class flare directed at the earth. would be a major event that could trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms. Such flares are thought to have triggered power blackouts in the past as well. Latest sunspot image from SOHO – More info from SIDC. |

I need to take a photo exploration of Williamsburg street art. Here’s one I saw on Monday evening, shot with my camera’s flash. The artist is Swoon. Her group is the Toyshop Collective. I’ve collected all my Swoon photos on this page. |
Tee Shirt Weather

|
It was tee shirt weather yesterday but like this woman I started out the door with a scarf and coat, fooled by the cloudy sky and recent cool temperatures. But I had a backpack to put mine in by the time I reached the Canal Street area where this was taken. |

The Giant Rat was busy elsewhere so Uncle Sam filled in for him. The Bricklayer’s union is claiming that The Boy’s Club of New York is giving Yates Restoration big bucks but Yates is not paying standard wages and benefits. East 11th Street. |
