Thriving

Friday, August 8th, 2003

The wet summer often brings us lush green wherever earth is allowed. This is one one of those weird traffic-island gardens of upper Broadway. They are fenced off in the middle of the street, and I only see them when stuck between rushing up and downtown traffic. These islands do have benches, though it’s hardly a relaxing place to be, just a concrete barrier away from death. But the plants seem to thrive behind the benches, in block-long plots, largely unmolested by the public. 101 Street and Broadway.
