Heavy Art

detail
Houston and First Ave., this morning. This is one of those enigmatic works of art that show up in this neighborhood every so often. What makes it interesting to me is not so much the content, but its existence. I suspect it is a recycled remnant from the Jewish tombstone business that once flourished in this neighborhood. Though it seems to now have a cross carved on it, next to the painted-silver couple holding hands under the crescent moon. It looks just light enough to transport with a handtruck, but I hope they didn’t have to bring it up or down any stairs. It’ll probably stay there until someone in the parks department requisitions some heavy equipment to move it.
