I returned for the 4 PM Not In Our Name rally.

Malachi Mccourt gets the crowd to sing. I’d estimate about 500 very chilly people were there in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, East 47th Street and First Avenue. Many young people came, including some who bussed in from Philadelphia.

These drummers are made of sterner stuff than I, they knelt and kept a steady beat for the entire event, and their clothes don’t look half as warm as mine. It was 12 degrees with a cutting breeze that made it feel even colder.

I arrived at the Isaiah Wall, First Avenue and East 43rd Street, opposite the main entrance to UN Headquarters at around 9 AM the stated time of the demo. I think I was one of the last people allowed into this area.

People were then sent into this other area on the sidewalk a bit north of us, even though it did not seem excessively crowded around the monument. A divide and conquer technique, it seemed to me. In order to try and get some photos in that segment of the crowd I had to walk all the way to Second Avenue. I walked to 47th Street and back to First Ave hoping to get a good shot of the UN, but my camera was out of memory. I then went back downtown. But by the time I got to the northern entrance of the barricades, the cops were claiming that it was too crowded to enter and told us to go to the 42nd Street entrance, which I already knew was closed.
A continuation of the protest will be happening later this afternoon (4 p.m.-6 p.m.) at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, East 47th Street and First Avenue. Which can hold a large crowd.
